Project Name: Technical Development to Upgrade Structural Integrity of Buildings in Densely Populated Urban Areas and its Strategic Implementation towards Resilient Cities in Bangladesh (TSUIB)

The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) and Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI) execute and conduct the TSUIB Project consisting research teams from UTokyo, Tohoku University, Osaka University, HBRI, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), University of Asia Pacific (UAP), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Urban Development Directorate (UDD), and Public Works Department (PWD). TSUIB Project started in 2016 and ended in June 2022. In short it is also abbreviated as SATREPS-TSUIB Project.

To improve Dhaka's earthquake resilience, overall project aims to develop seismic evaluation and retrofit techniques suitable for buildings in Bangladesh, and to develop urban planning upgrading scenarios for efficiently deploying them on a societal level. Seismic evaluation and ferrocement retrofitting of masonry infilled reinforced concrete frame was the focus of team comprising AUST, HBRI and Tohoku University. This team contributed to the preparation of “Seismic Evaluation” and “Seismic Retrofitting” guidelines for the existing reinforced concrete buildings of Bangladesh. Prof. Dr. Sharmin Reza Chowdhury worked as a contact person from 2016 to June 2019 and Dr. Fatema-Tuz-Zahura worked as a contact person from July, 2019 to June 2022 from AUST. The Project was jointly funded by JICA and GoB. AUST faculty member Dr. Debasish Sen, Assistant Professor, achieved PhD degree and Ms. Zasiah Tafheem, Assistant Professor, is pursuing PhD degree, from Tohoku University, Japan with the assistance of this Project.
