Industrial Visit at Kaptai Dam

On 17th February 2023, the students of 4th year, 2nd semester of IPE program of the MPE Department along with their faculty members visited the Kaptai Dam in Chattogram. The main purpose of the visit was to get a detailed insight into the facility’s working principles, processes, and safety engineering. A couple of administration members guided the students and shared some insightful information about the facility.

From the visit, they learned that the Kaptai water dam significantly impacts the region’s economy. The water dam was built in 1962 on the Karnaphuli river and had a total installed capacity of 230 MW. The dam has a water height of 745 meters. Moreover, the facility is equipped with 5 hydroelectric power stations that generate electricity for the national grid. The dam also has exceptional maintenance and control engineering. The students learned that a modernized control system is being used for proper maintenance and ensuring the proper conduction of the dam.

The dam is subjected to various environmental factors, including floods, earthquakes, and landslides, which can pose a significant risk to the integrity of structure. Therefore, it is essential to conduct regular inspections and repairs to ensure the safety of dam and prevent any potential disasters.

In conclusion, the Kaptai water dam is a significant engineering feat. It is crucial in generating hydroelectricity and supplying water to various regional industries. The Kaptai water dam is an example of how engineering can help drive economic growth and development in a region.
