Best Paper Award received at the 12th IEEE International Women in Engineering Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (WIECON-ECE), 2026

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is delighted to share that Tanjila Broti, Lecturer (G-I), has been honored with the prestigious “Best Paper Award” at the 12th IEEE International Women in Engineering Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (IEEE WIECON-ECE 2026). Her research paper, “A Leakage-Controlled Pipeline for Multi-Class Alzheimer’s Staging with MARU-Net Hippocampal Segmentation,” co-authored with Muhammad Nazrul Islam of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), stood out among the 600 research papers submitted at the conference. Organized by the IEEE Bangladesh Section and hosted by Southeast University, Dhaka, the conference took place from October 30 to 31, 2026, with the award conferred on its closing day.

Alzheimer’s disease remains one of the most pressing challenges in modern healthcare, and determining its stage early and accurately can make a profound difference in patient care. The primary objective of this research is to stage the disease across multiple classes by precisely segmenting the hippocampus, one of the earliest brain regions to show signs of degeneration, using the MARU-Net deep learning architecture. What sets the work apart is its rigorous, leakage-controlled design: by keeping training and evaluation data strictly separated, the pipeline ensures that its results are trustworthy and truly reflective of real-world performance, addressing a critical yet often overlooked pitfall in medical artificial intelligence.
